First Responder Operations (Hazmat)

Prepare first responders to confidently handle tanker and trailer emergencies

Each year, tens of thousands of incidents involving hazardous materials (HazMat) occur on public roads and highways due to vehicle accidents. For first responders, realistic training for these emergencies is critical to preventing death or serious injury. This VR training provides an immersive, life-like experience where responder teams can learn and practice Hazmat identification and response at the scene of a tractor trailer accident. The training can be single user or used simultaneously by a team.

what you'll learn

This interactive VR training meets OSHA training requirements and allows responders to practice hands-on emergency response where they will learn:

  • Team communication and collaboration techniques
  • Proper application of the ERG (Emergency Response Guidebook)
  • Identification of hazardous materials (labels, containers, shipping manifest, transport vessels)
  • Appropriate application of response actions and hazard management

The VR Experience

The VR training starts with a selection of single or multiple users. Trainees are then taken on-scene to a tractor trailer accident on a rural highway where hazardous materials could be present. The scenario can be altered as to whether or not people are present, time of day, if a fire has broken out, if the vehicle is a tanker or cargo trailer, the approach distance, and various hazardous materials that can be present. Trainees are encouraged to collaborate and clearly communicate Hazmat first responder awareness on-site. They can utilize the Emergency Response Guidebook and must correctly examine and identify labels, containers, shipping manifests, and transport vessels. Once hazardous substances are identified, appropriate emergency response actions should be taken to control the scene. After completing the experience, first responders will receive a score from the outcome of the training performance and a total score for the session. Users are graded on fulfilling training requirements such as: proper PPE application, hazardous material identification, proper identification of vehicle, placards, and UN numbers, and proper approach and evacuation distances.
